Mortar Design for Conservation – Danube Roman Frontier 2000 Years after (MoDeCo2000)
The Institute of Archaeology is the leading institution in the project Mortar Design for Conservation – Danube Roman Frontier 2000 Years after (MoDeCo2000) funded within PROMIS programme (2020-2022; grant no. 6067004) by the Science Fund of the Republic Serbia. Project partners are the Faculty of Technology Novi Sad from the University of Novi Sad and the Institute for Testing of Materials (IMS).
The Project advances scientific knowledge of historic building materials and technologies for sustainable protection of landscapes from the Roman period on the territory of Serbia. It will deliver a comprehensive database on archaeology, architecture, conservation science, technology, geology and chemistry of raw materials and technologies for mortar production; design, test and apply in situ novel conservation mortars based on local materials and traditional technologies; and offer a set of recommendations for conservation and management of Roman cultural heritage in Serbia as well as for contemporary civil engineering, promoting sustainable use of natural resources, improving the lives of the local communities.
Research tasks are closely linked with the case study of “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Danube Limes in Serbia”, supporting its inscription to the UNESCO World Heritage List. They will bring together technical and humanistic expertise in the area of cultural heritage research, protection, and use, with the strong synergy of team members educated in different research fields, coming from leading scientific institutions in Serbia, preserving the essential message of the Project.
The Project scientific concept is based on the prevailing idea of modern conservation science which requires a holistic multidisciplinary approach, providing scientific knowledge, information for practical conservation, and new solutions for building industry relied on the past and preservation of natural resources. The Project will offer a necessary scientific base for the conservation works in general, as a novelty in Serbia and an evolving concept Europe-wide, as well as recommendations for its practice and nomination dossier for the case study. It will highly contribute to the establishment of conservation as a recognized scientific field in Serbia, linking young researchers from various disciplines, as a way to introduce the long-term partnership between science and practice.
